Working for the Civil Service

Explore the roles, responsibilities and working arrangements of civil servants.

The work

Some civil servants work directly with people who use Government services. Others prepare policy advice, develop digital services, manage public finances, undertake research or support corporate functions.

The duties of each organisation follow its particular responsibilities. A job title by itself does not describe the whole role.

Working with others

Civil servants work with colleagues across departments and, where appropriate, other public bodies and local authorities. They must understand the limits of their responsibilities and refer decisions requiring further authority.

Conditions and support

Working patterns, appointment terms, workplace arrangements and development opportunities vary between positions. The individual vacancy describes what applies.
