What is the Civil Service?

Civil servants support Government and the delivery of public services.

What civil servants do

Civil servants work across Government departments and public bodies. They administer services, advise ministers, maintain official records and support the delivery of lawful decisions.

Their responsibilities differ from those of ministers, Parliament, the Judiciary and independent regulators. Each vacancy explains the work and reporting arrangements of the particular post.

Standards of conduct

Civil servants are expected to work with integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality, provide accurate information and handle official records responsibly.
